Annual Giving

October 2007

Dear Friends of the Rothko Chapel,

Thank you for the crucial role you play in supporting peace, freedom, and social justice. Because of people like you, the Rothko Chapel continues to be a gathering place for those who value the need for a sacred space. The Chapel is open to all for meditation and honest dialogue to foster understanding of pressing world issues.

John and Dominique de Menil were committed to the idea of contemplation and action. Contemplation, both meditative and interactive, leads to thoughtful peace-centered action. Begun in 1971, the Rothko Chapel continues to offer diverse programming to engage us intellectually, artistically, and spiritually. Two recent programs included Dr. Bob Edgar, president and CEO of Common Cause, and Jennifer Quigley, speaking on Burma, “The World’s Least Known Humanitarian Crisis.” Among the many upcoming events will be The United Nations Association International Choir, Chris Hedges, a Muslim Panel, and a concert by The Ebony Opera Guild.

Your donations help keep the Chapel open year round, allow our excellent programs to be free to all, protect the priceless Mark Rothko paintings, and maintain the Chapel grounds, which include the reflection pool and Barnett Newman’s Broken Obelisk, which is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I ask that you put the Rothko Chapel near the top of your charitable giving list. This magnificent gift of the de Menils to the world is a sacred place for private meditation, experiencing beauty, and promoting dialogue that will lead to thoughtful action.

There is a great need today for such a place to experience, reflect, and to learn. Please stop for a moment to think about the value of the Chapel and give as generously as you can. We need you. Your gift will make a big difference in what we do. Thank you for supporting the Rothko Chapel 2007-2008 Annual Fund Drive.

Sincerely,

Gayle Ross DeGeurin
