Music for Peace
featuring Adam Tendler
Friday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m.
The Rothko Chapel and Foundation for
Modern Music join the Musicians' Alliance for Peace to honor Music for Peace
weekend with a reflective evening of modern chamber music. The program
features pianist and Artistic Director of Foundation for Modern Music, Adam
Tendler, joined by Houston Symphony violinist Sophia Silivos, and violist
conductor Jacob Sustaita performing works by Arvo Pärt, John Cage, James
MacMillan, and Toru Takemitsu. The concert will also include the world
premiere of Tendler's extended work for amplified pianist, "Autumn Lines,"
incorporating texts by T'ang Dynasty poet Li Po.
The Musicians' Alliance for Peace first held Music for Peace weekend in 2004
to unify a global community of artists and presenters dedicated to
the vision of a lasting peace. By coordinating a vast number of concerts
worldwide, The Music for Peace Project brings attention to international
peace efforts while building a global community of active, socially
conscious artists. Dedicated to cultivating peace as both a means and an
end, The Music for Peace Project creates a global celebration of peace and
provides a voice for the vibrant community that believes in peaceful
solutions for the future.
Over the last three years, the Musicians' Alliance for Peace has sponsored
over 350 concerts in 30 countries in the course of three 3 day weekends.
This international, non-partisan call for peace was shared with audiences as
diverse as the music itself. Music has the power to inspire compassion and
foster understanding between cultures while deepening the bonds that form
our communities.
The concert will include works by Chinese, Scottish, Estonian, and American
composers, each uniquely using music as grounds to explore tranquility and
revelation. Tendler expects that the concert
will "encourage the audience to reconcile more with their own history and
inner conflicts, rather than present an explicit political or social
agenda," adding, "we all must settle the score with ourselves individually
before aiming our sights on world peace collectively. The music on this
program, perhaps like any music, reflects that journey."
