Islam: Truths and Falsehoods
Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 7:30 PM

On February 13th, at 7:30 pm, The Rothko Chapel will host a panel of local Muslims to address misconceptions of Muslims in the United States and abroad.  Panelists will provide accurate information about practitioners of Islam in Houston and throughout the world.  Islam has been seldom understood in the United States and this situation has only grown more serious since the events of 9/11.

The Rothko Chapel has a longstanding history of promoting interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding.  In 1971, an Imam, a Priest and a Rabbi consecrated The Chapel to be a sacred space for all people.  The Chapel is dedicated to nurturing authentic relationships between people of diverse faiths.  In today’s climate of fear and intolerance, The Chapel considers it critically important to counter bigotry and ignorance with information and understanding.

Panelists:

Wagih Abu-Rish, Houston businessman and president of the Arab-American Secular Coalition, which promotes a secular political framework within the Arab-American community and the Arab world. Raised in Lebanon, he is a graduate of the University of Houston and has a Master’s degree from the University of Oregon.

Dr. Kamel Fotouh. Egyptian-born professor of engineering and owner of an engineering consulting company, Dr. Fotouh is a member of the Katy Muslim community and co-founder of the newly-organized West Houston-Katy Interfaith Coalition.

Cheryl Pearson, African-American educator, was born in Los Angeles and converted to Islam in 1995. An adviser to the Institute of Interfaith Dialog in Houston, she has participated in symposia focusing on women and Islam.

Dr. Fred von der Mehden will moderate the panel. Emeritus Albert Thomas professor of political science at Rice University and a scholar at the James Baker Institute, he has written and spoken extensively on moderate Islam in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.  We appreciate your RSVPs for counting purposes.  To RSVP for this event please click here.
