Mark Rothko is among the
great 20th century artists collected in depth by John and
Dominique de Menil. Works by Rothko — along
with masterpieces by artists
such as Barnett Newman, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Fernand Leger,
Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Paul Klee; Surrealists such as Max Ernst and Rene
Magritte; and Pop Artists, Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist — rotate in the
Menil Collection’s modern and contemporary galleries. Paintings and
sculpture by Cy Twombly are housed in their own adjacent building, the Cy Twombly Gallery.
The Menil Collection and
the Cy Twombly Gallery, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano,
anchor a cultural enclave of shaded streets, sculpture-filled parks, and
contemplative art venues. The main museum opened in 1987 to house, exhibit,
and preserve the private art collection of the philanthropic de Menil
family. The collection is recognized not only for its quality and its depth,
but also for its distinctive presentation. The Menil’s diverse holdings
represent many world cultures and thousands of years of human creativity,
from prehistoric times to the present. As true modernist, the de Menils recognized the
profound formal and spiritual connections between contemporary
works
of art and the arts of ancient and indigenous cultures. The works in the
collection range from classical
Mediterranean civilizations and the Byzantine Empire, as well
as an array of ethnographic art and artifacts from Africa, Oceania, and the Pacific Northwest. The Menil also
presents special exhibitions and programs throughout the year. Admission to all Menil
sites, exhibitions and public programs is always free of charge.
