Private Ceremonies

The Rothko Chapel, dedicated in 1971, is an intimate sanctuary available to all people. A modern meditative environment created by the paintings of Mark Rothko, the Chapel welcomes each year visitors of every faith and from all parts of the world. - from The Rothko Chapel Mission Statement

The Rothko Chapel welcomes private ceremonies and celebrations from all religious traditions. The understated beauty of the space makes it an ideal environment for simple yet elegant ceremonies. The interfaith sanctuary creates a tranquil atmosphere for contemplation and remembrance.

Please carefully review the Chapel policies and guidelines for use below.  If you would like to reserve the Chapel for your ceremony, please contact Alison Pruitt at alison@rothkochapel.org or call 713-524-9839. 

Chapel Use Policies
• Ceremonies may not be scheduled more than 6 months in advance.
• Ceremonies must be held between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
• The total time allotted for ceremonies is 60 minutes including seating
  and departure of guests.
• Seating will be arranged for a maximum of 100 guests.
• The Rothko Chapel logo may not be used for invitations or programs.
• Photography and videotaping are not permitted inside the Chapel.
• Food and drinks are not permitted inside the Chapel.
• The paintings are not to be touched.
• The Chapel Hosts are charged with the safety of the paintings, and their
  requests should be respected.


Guidelines for Wedding Ceremonies
• Weddings must be performed by clergy from a religious tradition.
• Dress rehearsals may be scheduled the week before the ceremony
  and after 5:00 p.m., but the Chapel will remain open to the public.
• Decorations including candles and flower arrangements are not permitted
  inside the Chapel or on the Chapel grounds, but flowers may be worn or
  carried by the wedding party.
• A guestbook and programs may be placed in the foyer.


Guidelines for Memorial Services
• No caskets or funerary urns are allowed on the Chapel grounds.
• One photograph may be displayed inside the Chapel.
• A guestbook, programs, and one small flower arrangement may be
  placed in the foyer.
