| An
ongoing program of colloquia stands out among the events that have taken
place in The Rothko Chapel. These colloquia express and confirm the
vocation of the Chapel.
“Traditional Modes of Contemplation and
Action”
July 1973
Brought together nineteen outstanding scholars of
religion who practice their faiths, from the Far East, the Middle East,
Africa, Europe and North America, including Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims,
Jews, Christians, an interpreter of native American Indian religion, and a
representative of African traditional religions. Their vast knowledge, in
concert, permitted the joy of discovering remarkable convergences amoung
religious traditions on the deepest levels.(Published as Contemplation and
Action in World Religions, Y. Ibish and I. Marculescu, eds., distributed
by The Rothko Chapel.)
“Human Rights/Human Reality”
December 1973
Inspired by Dom Helder Camara, Archbishop of Olinda and Recife,
Brazil, was planned to coincide with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the
United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This colloquium
challenged men of faith and of science to an exchange on the fateful
connection between human rights and social and economic reality, and to
provoke, in public discussion, reflections toward new attitudes.
"Toward a New Strategy for Development”
February 1977
The
subject of the third colloquium, emerged directly from that of the second.
To approach concretely the problem of the growing gap between rich and
poor nations throughout the world, ten papers were invited from
distinguished development economists and social scientists, some from
developing countries (Banladesh, Brazil, India) and others from the
industrialized world. The results were intense, wide-ranging debates that
gave unfiltered insights into the development issues confronting all
nations today.
(Published as Toward a New Strategy for Development, compiled by The
Rothko Chapel, Pergamon Press Inc., available at The Rothko Chapel.)
"Islam: Spiritual Message and Quest
for Justice”
October 1981
Brought together distinguished Muslims from
all parts of the Islamic world, representing a wide variety of
geographical regions, scholarly disciplines, opinions and viewpoints, for
a free and open discussion of many aspects of Islam. The colloquium
presented an authentic image, from within the Islamic community, of the
human as well as the transcendental values of a civilization very much
present in the world affairs today, yet still misunderstood.
"Ethnicities and Nations”
October 1983
brought together an international group of anthropologists and other
scholars to reflect on questions of identity and to examine the pressures
placed on traditional ethnic communities by modern nation-state models of
government.
(Published as Ethnicities and Nations: Processes of Interethnic Relations
in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific, Remo Guidieri,
Francesco Pellizzi, Stanley J. Tambiah, eds., distributed by The Rothko
Chapel.)
"Christian and Churches on the Eve of Vatican II”
January 1991
An international conference organized with the Istituto per le Scienze
Religiose of Bologna, gathered outstanding theologians and historians to
discuss and evaluate contributions of individuals, events, and trends of
thought that shaped Vatican II.
