Art and Environment
An internationally known author, 1968 Guggenheim Fellowship winner, activist and curator, Lucy Lippard has written 18 books on contemporary art, has been a champion for feminist artists, and has received two grants for criticism from the National Endowment for the Arts. She has done performances, comics, guerrilla theatre, and edited several independent publications. She has also curated over 50 exhibitions, most recently an exhibit in Denver dealing with the environment.

Stolen Labor, Stolen Promises
Heather White, President of New Standards, will speak about the high price paid by China's workers and the undocumented working poor under China's economic "miracle." She will discuss sweatshops, forced labor practices, destruction of the environment and China's food security due to lack of oversight and corruption, and what is being done to improve the workers' situation.

Human Rights in Zimbabwe
The Houston Chapter of the United Nations Association and The Rothko Chapel are pleased to host Methodist Bishop Abel Tendekayi Muzorewa of Zimbabwe. Bishop Muzorewa will describe the developing crisis situation in Zimbabwe. His liberation theology and nonviolent method have made him a national leader in the ongoing effort to advocate peace and better economic conditions for the people of Zimbabwe.

Music from the Silk Road
Asia Society presents music from Uzbekistan on the Rothko Chapel plaza Saturday, May 17th. In the 18th and 19th centuries, a tradition of court music, performed largely by Jews or Muslims of Jewish origin, developed in Bhukara. The Izro Malakov Ensemble performers emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1990s and perform regularly at the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the Silk Road Project directed by Yo-Yo Ma and at colleges and universities across the U.S. In Houston to celebrate the groundbreaking for the new Asia Society Texas Center in the Museum District, the Ensemble will be joined by dancer Tamara Kataeva.

Fragments from Augustine the Saint
Tenor Kenneth Gayle, Lauren Anderson of Houston Ballet, and featured guest artists will perform the chamber opera Fragments from Augustine the Saint, by National Endowment for the Arts award-winning composer Dr. Beverly Grigsby. The dark, meditative environment of The Rothko Chapel will serve to intensify the musical depiction of St. Augustine's spiritual and philosophical struggles, his "dark night of the soul," and inner transformation.

Post 9/11 Human Rights Violations in the U.S.
David Fathi, director of the U.S. Program at Human Rights Watch, will discuss immigration, national security and counterterrorism in the post 9/11 era. Human Rights Watch is the largest human rights organization based in the United States and one of the largest in the world. The U.S. Program works to defend the rights of particularly vulnerable groups in the United States, and has published groundbreaking reports on counter-terrorism after September 11, treatment of non-citizens, life without parole for children in the U.S., the death penalty, and racial discrimination.

Experience many of the world's meditative traditions in this series of free, monthly meditations. Dates: January - December 2008
