Dr. Robert Hesse
Contemplative Outreach
Dr.
Robert Hesse is a
Co-coordinator and Commissioned Presenter for Contemplative Outreach (CO),
an international spiritual network
of individuals and small faith communities committed to renewing the
contemplative dimension of the Gospel in everyday, active life.
Dr. Hesse is an ordained Catholic Deacon serving at St. John Vianney, the
largest parish in Texas, part of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
He is on the spirituality committee for over 300 deacons in the Archdiocese
of Galveston-Houston and serves as a retreat master at Holy Name Retreat
Center in Houston on seven retreats annually. He lectures at the
Benedictine Spirituality Center, The World Community for Christian
Meditation, parishes, and retreat centers in the U.S. and Canada. Dr.
Hesse's main topic of interest is the convergence of science and religion
especially as they relate to physics-metaphysics, chemistry-life,
biology-consciousness, and psychology-mysticism. He also works closely with
the Center for Faith and Culture at St. Mary’s Seminary on arranging
accredited courses on contemplative prayer.
Dr. Hesse
was a research scientist at Shell Development and for twelve years has owned
a project management consulting company in the energy industry. He
earned his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry and Physical Chemistry
respectively from St. Louis University and his B.Th. degree in Theology from
the University of St. Thomas.
Dr. Hesse will summarize the
theological meaning of centering and contemplative prayer as relationship
with God, briefly covering the historical origins of Christian meditation.
He will examine the practical methodology of centering prayer including
overall guidelines, the sacred word, and how to deal with thoughts. Dr.
Hesse will close with a discussion of the fruits of the prayer, how to
extend those fruits throughout the day, and the psychological ramifications
of divine healing.
