2025 Concert for Peace with Jaipur Literature Festival

2025 Concert for Peace with Jaipur Literature Festival Houston

On September 7, the Rothko Chapel hosted a sold-out celebration of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace in collaboration with JLF International Festival (JLF) Houston. Now in the third year of partnership, the Chapel deeply values JLF’s important work in bringing literature, music, and cultural dialogue to Houston and is grateful for the opportunity to continue building this relationship.

The morning opened with rousing remarks from Rothko Chapel President Imam Abdullah Antepli, marking his first program since his appointment. His words set an inspiring tone for the day, emphasizing the Chapel’s mission to unite art, spirituality, and human rights. He was followed by welcoming remarks from Kelly Johnson, Rothko Chapel’s Programs Director, and Sanjoy Roy, JLF’s Managing Director, underscoring the strength of this collaboration.

The program itself unfolded as a dialogue between poetry and music. Houston Poet Laureate Reyes Ramirez began with a powerful reading, setting a contemplative atmosphere. This was followed by a spellbinding performance by the Aditya Prakash Ensemble, whose interpretation of Karnatik music blended traditional repertoire with contemporary improvisation.

The spotlight then shifted to the youth poets of The Fay School — Imaan Ahmad, Stella Friedman, Minnah Khan, and Olivia Shurin — who shared their original work with grace and poise, moving the audience with their insight and authenticity. Another set by the Ensemble deepened the atmosphere of reflection, before Ramirez returned to close the program with a final reading.

Afterward, attendees gathered on the Chapel plaza to nibble on delicious food from Mezban Restaurant and Caterers and enjoy fellowship. The sense of joy, connection, and cultural exchange made the morning a truly memorable celebration of peace — and a meaningful continuation of the Chapel’s partnership with JLF Houston.
